A Sprawling Narrative

Starting in 2015, Critical Role is an American web series that centres around the game Dungeons And Dragons. The series streams every Thursday (available on Twitch and YouTube) and revolves around a cast of professional voice actors.

Initially, the group began playing the game as a one-off for Liam O’Brien’s birthday. However, due to how much they enjoyed it, they continued to expand upon their first campaign — using the Pathfinder ruleset. In the early days of the show, there were eight cast members, but Orion Acaba (who played Tiberius) departed after 27 episodes.

The remaining cast members were Ashley Johnson, Travis Willingham, Laura Bailey, Liam O’Brien, Taliesin Jaffe, Marisha Ray, and Same Riegel. Matthew Mercer, a veteran Dungeon Master, was made responsible for overseeing the game.

Lasting until October 2017, the first campaign consisted of 115 episodes. This was shortly followed by a second campaign in January 2018, which ended in 2021 after 141 episodes. Between each of the campaigns, the cast also engaged in various one-shots.
